A LITTLE CZECH. A LITTLE CURIOSITY.
A tram to catch? A bread roll to buy? Already two excellent reasons to try a little Czech.
Try a few words. Make a funny mistake. We’ll explain what happened in plain language, then you can have another go.
The blue crew is on your side.

A TEN-SECOND ADVENTURE
Which word would you use to say hello in Czech?
Pick a word. The creature is rooting for you.
Ahoj = hello (informal) · děkuji = thank you · na shledanou = goodbye.

THE WORD-PUZZLE WORKSHOP
In Czech, a line above a vowel tells you to hold the sound longer. That little line can change the meaning. Spanish accent marks usually help with stress; English spelling gives fewer clues.
byt = a flat
být = to be
Let the long vowel stretch a little. The creature is listening.
Czech often changes the end of a word to show what it is doing in a sentence. In Spanish and English, the noun usually stays the same in this example.
kočka → Vidím kočku.
Veo un gato.
I see a cat.
Same furry visitor. A different little word puzzle.
Czech and Spanish can often leave out the word for “I”: the verb ending gives the clue. English usually says “I” as well.
Pracuji. · Trabajo.
I work.
One useful pattern at a time. No need to collect every ending today.
Czech words can move around to highlight an idea. Small words still have favourite places. English relies more on word order; Spanish also lets you leave some words unstated.
Nerozumím. · No entiendo.
I don’t understand.
That sentence is a useful tool, not a confession. Ask us to explain again.
A short video will introduce Czech and a few useful comparisons. Until it is ready, the blue crew and the explanations above will get you started. Captions and a transcript will come with the recording.
